Salad Jars

Salad Jars

The word Salad brings the images of all the diet food in front of your eyes and diet food means boring bland dull food, isn't it? Dieting can be downright difficult( ask me ;))
But Who says diet food is boring and monotonous. Look at these beautiful Jars. Don't you feel like grabbing them right away.

They were an instant hit at my place. My son who makes all the faces possible if I ask him to have some salad with his meal skipped his dinner and devoured a jar in no time. This made me think if you simply present something in a fancy and attractive way it becomes all the more palatable and enjoyable.
If your goal is to eat more salads, a bowl full of lettuce, cucumbers and tomatoes can get old and monotonous. But with layers of fruit, veggies, grains and proteins, salad-in-a-jar recipes are the perfect option for quick and easy packed lunches (or make-ahead dinners!). All you need is a jar, some basic veggies and a few creative dressings for a clever and sophisticated salad you can actually look forward to. The idea is pretty simple: start with filling a dressing into a jar and then layer various ingredients like greens, veggies, rice and cheese on top. Keep those jars in the fridge until you need them. Grab a bowl and empty the jar. The dressing will then cover the whole salad. Done.

You can make these salad jars in any empty glass bottles or Mason jars. Just keep in mind the lid should be tight fitting.
You can make it in two ways, traditionally the dressing goes in first and is topped up with veggies and proteins. This guarantees that your salad ingredients don't get soggy.
But I like to keep dressing on the side or it can packed in a small container separately if you are planning to carry the jar along with you at your workplace.
The basic idea when packing salads in jars is to start with the heaviest and most non-absorbent ingredients with the dressing on the bottom of the jar and work your way up through the lighter ingredients until you end up with the salad greens on the top so that they won't get soggy.
When you want to eat your salad, just unscrew the cap and shake it into a bowl. Before taking it out in the bowl just give it a good shake to toss the salad ingredients with the dressing. Take it out in a bowl and give it more toss to make sure everything is evenly coated.
Alternatively, if you have packed your dressing separately, just toss out the salad in the bowl, add in the dressing and toss it.

There is no fix recipe or Ingredients list to make Salad Jar. Just add in whatever you like in layers keeping few basic things in mind and you are good to go.

Here, I am sharing the way I have prepared these cute jars. In the ingredients section I am not mentioning the quantity, because it entirely depends on you how much you like a particular thing. I forgot adding nuts to my jars. However, you can add them after the salad greens so that they retain their crunchiness.

INGREDIENTS:

Cucumber slices
Beetroot grated
Carrot grated
Tomato chopped
Baby Spinach
Chickpeas
Corn

For Dressing

Lemon Juice
Salt
Black pepper crushed
Chaat masala

DIRECTIONS:

Add the ingredients for dressing. You can make the dressing according to your choice.

The dressing is the first thing to go in the jar. Or else you can keep it separately.
Layer the proteins and veggies in the jar.
Just make sure salad leaves are to be assembled in the last at the top.
Shut the cap tightly.
Voila!!! We are done.
Don't forget to carry a bowl and fork with you to toss your salad in.
Happy healthy eating!!
